On May 3, 2017, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducted 9,524 roadside inspections across the United States and Canada and, as a result, nearly 2,000 vehicles were placed out of service for violations.<\/p><div id=\"glm-mobile-toc-box\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/div>\n<p>Around 12% of commercial vehicles inspected were placed out of service for brake-related violations. Many of the violations were related to \u201cimproperly installed\u201d or \u201cpoorly maintained\u201d brake systems, both of which \u201ccan reduce the braking capability and increase stopping distances of trucks and buses, which pose a serious risk to driver and public safety,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/cvsa.org\/news-entry\/2017-unannounced-brake-safety-day-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">according to the CVSA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why This Inspection is a Concern for Drivers<\/h2>\n<p>A truck\u2019s capacity to brake is central to the safety of everyone on our roads. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Insurance Institute of Highway Safety<\/a><u> (IIHS)<\/u>, the stopping distance of a tractor-trailer is up to three times longer than that of a passenger vehicle. Regulators have sought to increase the braking capacity of commercial vehicles over the course of several years to reduce the number of crashes between large trucks and smaller vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Regulations and advances in braking technology have likely increased the safety of large trucks, but the recent inspection by the CVSA reveals that far too many commercial vehicles are operating with insufficient brakes. That puts truck drivers and other motorists at risk for serious injury.<\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of all carriers, trucking companies, drivers, and manufacturers to ensure commercial vehicles are working properly and comply with regulations. The CVSA is conducting more inspections on Brake Safety Day, which takes place on September 7, and safety advocates are hoping to see improved compliance with legal standards.<\/p>\n<h2>Tractor-Trailer Safety is of the Utmost Importance<\/h2>\n<p>In 2015, the most recent year for which statistics are available nationally, there were 4,311 large trucks and buses involved in fatal crashes, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/safety\/data-and-statistics\/large-truck-and-bus-crash-facts-2015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration<\/a><u> (FMCSA)<\/u>. In 2016, tractor-trailers and buses were involved in <a href=\"http:\/\/ftp.dot.state.tx.us\/pub\/txdot-info\/trf\/crash_statistics\/2016\/27.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">421 fatal crashes<\/a> in Texas. That same year, in Harris County alone, there were <a href=\"http:\/\/ftp.dot.state.tx.us\/pub\/txdot-info\/trf\/crash_statistics\/2016\/29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">5,628 crashes<\/a> involving commercial motor vehicles, which led to 82 incapacitating injuries and 30 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>We are all invested in the safety of commercial vehicles.
